It's Fashion Friday!: Bruins and Marigolds

Plant these! These marigolds act
as organic nematode
 control from Burpee.
I don’t know what it is lately, but I just can’t get enough of the color marigold. Perhaps it is because it is time to plant the marigolds. The dandelions are out in full force and I LIKE IT. The little wild strawberries have their happy flowers littering the grass outside the pipe shop where I work part of the week. Or, maybe, IT’S HOCKEY PLAYOFFS!!!!!!! I get equally excited about the Bruins winning and the end of hard frost season (time to start my container jungle).
Coming soon, to my eyelashes
via Chanel.
This yellow kick is so out of control this spring, I even bought yellow mascara. That’s right, I am going to paint my eyelashes the color of road paint. You’ve seen blue and purple already…. Have I lost my mind? Could be. You’ll know before I do! Let’s celebrate Bruins wins, petunia planting, and insanity with a couple of sunshine inspired delights.

I just can't get enough Prada footwear -
it's so comfortable.
I have been searching for an acceptable summertime wedge sandal for more than one summer. I thought I found one I liked yesterday – it was made by Camper – and it was on sale. I like Campers. They’re comfortable. They’re a little pricey though. It’s funny how my pricing rationalization works. An example would be: I refuse to pay more than $4-6 for a t-shirt. In the same shopping trip you could watch me decide that it was completely reasonable to spend $30 on one bottle of nail polish. So, these Campers I saw were on sale for $99 (good price for Campers!). I just didn’t like them enough to pay that much for them. Conversely, this Prada wedge is FANTASTIC! And I am not at all appalled by the $520 price tag (maybe a tiny bit, but not much). I just don’t have the money to buy them. I guess this is strike one for my sanity.
Squishy, sunny, carryall.
I’ve been over Marc Jacobs for a while. I think he’s over-branded himself. It’s not about fashion with him - it’s about selling his name. EH. Get over yourself. That’s what I say. Every now and again, however, I still see things that tickle my fancy. This tote bag, for instance, is awfully cheery. The price is ridiculous, at $200 (Rational Sarah is back). I could make this bag for you. I’m guessing time and supplies would be under $40. I also would not quilt Marc Jacobs’ name into it. It would probably say “Go Bruins” (for the record, Krug scored his first goal as I typed that) or “Monsanto sucks.”
Balenciaga’s Arena Classic City bag is available in this lovely color this season – they call it Mangue. Yes, I’m crazy to even mention
$$$$$$$
it. The bag costs $1545. It’s ridiculous to spend this much on a handbag. That’s a mortgage/rent payment. I must mention though, I saw an awful lot of Balenciaga bags on young ladies’ arms when I was in NYC a couple of weekends ago. What I’d like to know is how these ladies can afford BOTH. Last time I checked, living in NYC wasn’t inexpensive. Anyways….
OUCH. My eyes.
Yellow is a tricky color to wear, which is why accessories are often the easiest way to get this color into your wardrobe. Always try this color on in natural light before making a permanent commitment to anything. If this means taking something home to try it so you can get something other than that odd fitting room glow, do it! (This is what generous return policies are for). Sometimes it’s good to get a second opinion as well. Love is blind – the dress may be pretty, but not so pretty on you. Sorry. It’s life! We all have things we can’t wear. I can’t wear greenish yellows or halter neck dresses (unless I’m trying to pass for a member of the USA Olympic swim team).
Maybe if you can’t wear yellow, you can get these pants for your boyfriend to wear when he goes golfing. I’m kidding. These are awful. They may be the right colors to cheer for the Bruins, but your boyfriend will look like he passed out drunk in the middle of the road after the Bruins game, and got run over by the road-line painting truck. Hey, isn’t it nifty that ALL the roads in America are black, yellow, and white? Take that, Rangers! (We win game one as I write this blog... mission accomplished. Do you have a victory dance?)

Your Grass Is A$$ - Sorry To Be Crass

You call this a weed? I call it a violet - pretty
and edible.

If there’s one thing I will never understand it is America’s predilection for grass. Not the smoke-able for pleasure kind, the chemically-treated, filler-of-acres-of-potentially-useful-space kind. The kind of grass that grows in prairies is beautiful. It’s green all summer. It’s fettered with a mixture of other plants – things people might call “weeds”, and grazing animals would probably call “food”, and the terrain would call “ground cover” or something to keep the land from eroding. Thankfully, the land that is not someone’s backyard seems to be free from mortal terror. If it is attached to a plot with a house, however, all bets for sane behavior are off.

Of course, we’ve already discussed that someone will probably come out with a gas-powered vacuum or blower to aerate the rodent feces and spew them all over the yard. When they are done with that, the next plan of action is to seed the lawn with a grass seed that is not native to the area. Rather than allowing Mother Nature to do what she does best, grow ecosystems, people think they can do better. They plant “better” grass. What makes one grass better than another? Sharper blades? A bluer hue of green? Is it less prickly when your trophy wife sits on it in her Daisy Dukes? Does it cut more easily (not that that matters much since it will most likely be sheared with a power mower that can shred human flesh)? And THEN since we need to optimize the land for the premium grass, we MUST KILL EVERYTHING ELSE. This means that any grass that is actually native or that will grow in the ground even when there isn’t enough water has to die. We should murder the violets. Dandelions have to go. And just to be sure, anything that flowers or has leaves, not blades, will have to go.
It would be one thing if the tender of this lawn painstakingly pulled each unwanted plant by hand, removing dandelions by the root, pulling every weed as you would out of a garden. While I would still find this to be odd behavior, I could at least appreciate the effort.  I weed my flowerpots. I have weeded gardens. It is a labor of love, and it is done to support the plants you are trying to foster. Most grass growers, however, give their grass the edge with some sort of chemical weapon. It’s always a weed killer they spread all over their plot of land to choke the life out of the beautiful green plants that have popped up in the places where the grass won’t grow. Monsanto and Dow, two of my favorite companies, are suppliers of such things.
This space could have been used for a garden. This space could have been used to let nature grow the plants it knows can grow. Instead, this space is being forced to try and grow non-native grass. If you live anywhere near where I do, the summer water bans are already in effect, so you may only water your lawn on even numbered days. It’s not raining very much. The grass seed you’ve put out, which hasn’t been eaten by the birds, is not growing so well. And you have now killed what was actually growing in your lawn. Without enough water, and with the approaching heat and sun of summer, it will only be a few weeks now before the beautiful cancer carpet you think you are growing turns completely brown. And then I’m left wondering, what on earth was the point of all that?!

It's Fashion Friday!: Enough Already With The Neon

Have I expressed to you how sick I am of neon? Not the signs. I love neon signs. I can’t get enough of bright burning gas in tubes artistically bent into letters, shapes, and numbers. LED signs are for losers. Please bring back those gaseous throwbacks. Neon apparel… GET RID OF IT! It was overdone in the eighties, it tried to hang into the nineties, and FAILED, and it’s back. It’s been back for too long. I thought it was a quick and dirty, one season throw back, and quick to the sale racks. Oh how wrong I was. And yet, I should have been right.
I was at TJ Maxx the other day and discovered some very neon, very multicolored (and not in a

than these $168 pants in Fresh Kiwi. How many ugly
pants blogs do I need to write?!
“this is chic” – colorblocked  sort of way) Nanette Lepore garments in heavy quantities (It was the SS2012 collection, I'm almost certain). I almost puked a little in my mouth. It was so much color that even a 4-year old would look at it and say “Mummy, no.” Sometimes things make it to the discount stores for a reason. I was encouraged by this sight, thinking “Well, maybe this means we are near the end of this trend. Perhaps the buyers and people who decided the Ready To Wear trends have decided fluorescent is OUT.” When I saw the t-shirt my friend Beth ordered online, thinking it was going to arrive in a normal shade of coral, and needed to return to J Crew today, and also saw the spring collection of apparel at the Gap, my eyes bled. Not really, but if it had been anatomically possible for that to happen as a reaction to oversaturated fluorescence, it would have been the response.

Doctors would call this COMORBIDITY.
Boob fringe - flattering for NO ONE, and
a hot orange bum, ditto. As usual, the worst
at your local Sears.
WHY IS THIS HAPPENING???? Are people having an extreme need to be visible in the dark? I cannot think of any other reason to cover oneself in Day-Glo colors. They are not pretty. They are not flattering. And you certainly should NEVER wrap them around your ass, despite the over-availability of bottoms in these hues. If black is slimming, then these colors are huge-ing. And no, that is not a word. I overheard a girl say to a friend today about a pair of neon poppy jeans “Are these too bright?” The response should have been “Do Cheetos make you fat?” Instead, the girl, who was clearly not a good friend, said “No, not at all.”
It’s not just pants that I have to look at in these terrible
No. There's so much wrong with this

colors. The ready to wear brands have forced them into things like blazers, dresses, and sweaters. It’s one thing to spend $15 on a hot pink t-shirt. To spend $75 on a hot pink blazer, on the other hand – you’re out of your mind! You are investing in a loser. This is a one hit wonder. You’re not going to wear this for multiple seasons. You’ll be lucky if you wear this multiple times. Every time you wear it the people around you are going to wince in pain. The people who were with you when you bought it might approve, but the straight guys around you will probably think “What the hell are you wearing?!” As will I.

Give Me My Money

Situations that wouldn’t fly:

I ate this pineapple. I walk to the checkout line at the grocery store. “Yeah, hi. I ate this pineapple. Oh, I’m not going to pay for it now though. I only take money out of my wallet on certain days, and you have to submit a request for it before I can even consider it. I’ll pay you for the pineapple next month.”

At the gas station. Fill the tank and pull away. Gas station attendants calmly send you an email a couple of weeks later. Miss, you didn’t pay us for the 15 gallons of gas you bought in April. “Oh I’m SO SORRY! I was just SO busy, I completely forgot to put my credit card in the slot at the pump! I didn’t even notice the police cars chasing me.”

Phone company….”Hi, AT&T, yes… I’m sorry to report that all of the people I have done work for have been too busy to pay me this spring. One of them even said as soon as he had a check he would walk the 1.5 miles to personally place it in the outgoing mail slut. (TRUE STORY) Yes, that’s right, I don’t have any money. I might someday though – hopefully free of venereal disease. Do you think you could just take my name off the bills and instead send them to the people who owe me money, taking me out of the equation? It would be so helpful….”

I’m pretty sure most situations where you tried to take a product without paying for it would end up the same – you get arrested. So, does someone want to explain to me why people seem to think it is okay to hire musicians and other artists and not pay them in a timely manner? Sometimes for months (Universities are SO good at this)? Last time I checked I didn’t know anyone who offered “performance services on loan.” This would not fly in corporate America. It does not fly with me either.
If I pay my phone bill late, I have to pay a late fee. When I get paid late for a job I play, should I not also get a late fee? Interest for the money you have withheld for my services? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bill that offered more than 30 days in which to remit payment. And even when 30 days is offered, that is usually considered “credit.” And that must be earned.
So, what is the solution for these non-payers? I have a funny feeling that having a rational conversation about the inappropriateness of the behavior would be wasted breath. We need to move straight to silently gaining some satisfaction out of these total crap situations. The Musicians’ Union’s “International Unfair List” just doesn’t cut it – does anyone else find this to be something that feels not much more effective than a 8-year old’s playground declaration? Perhaps the said defaulter on the performance loan could have their picture posted in local grocery stores with the caption “This person DOES NOT PAY for pineapple.”

It's Fashion Friday!: Sitting In The Whorechestra

The idea of “concert black” is not a complicated one. For professional musicians it’s pretty well understood that concert black is tuxes for men, and appropriately dressy black clothing for ladies, i.e. cover your upper arms, your cleavage, your knees, preferably your calves, and most DEFINITELY anything that would be showcased in a pornographic film. Common sense would also dictate that the color of the things you chose to cover all of the aforementioned anatomical parts would be …. Black.
This Forever21 dress is NOT concert black. THIS
is a Ho-niform.

In the past couple of months, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to revisit the college experience by being paid to substitute/help out in a few college ensembles. It was a rough job at Indiana University making sure that no one snuck out on stage dressed like a hooker with a penchant for Berlioz, but Tom Wieligman made it happen. I don’t know where you are right now Mr. Wieligman, but I can’t tell you how many people appreciated that one small part of the large job you did. Thank you for that, and many other things. I can’t even imagine how many instances of visual scarring were prevented over the years, and thus lawsuits against the university for emotional abuse, negligence, heaven only knows what.
Free People. This is ALSO NOT
concert black. Even if it IS $228.
I think we need to create and market a “Pocket-Wieligman” for concert wear abuse situations. I'm not sure if it would be some sort of alarm, a concert-black-styled floor-length foldable plastic poncho, or just a protective eyeglass for concert goers... I haven't really thought it through. The interpretation of “concert black” by recreational musicians (and ladies who go to all-girls institutions in particular) is leaving a lot to be desired. I saw white sneakers. I saw one girl with a white sweater. There were black jeans, and MAN were they tight. “Were we supposed to look nice for this?” I heard one girl say to another. I saw red shoes. I saw a LOT of CFM shoes. If you’ve never seen that acronym before the first letter stands for the opposite of go, the second one rhymes with duck, and the third would be a homonym of Mi. Heels just shouldn’t be that high (and you KNOW I love shoes and high heels), especially when paired with a skinny jean. It just screams “Fill in the blank with your nationality of choice” Trash.
All of this paled in comparison to what I would
Finally something pretty! This

playing them.
call Ho-niform meets Concert Black. Picture it… A somewhat sheer, large patterned lace, mini-skirted dress. Very large sparkly earrings. A pair of those CFM shoes. No stockings/hose. Now, sit that girl down in a folding chair, spread her legs and throw in a cello. Actually, don’t. Don’t picture it. Because it is awful. It is a horrible picture. I don’t know if that young lady thought that what she was wearing would be okay because that cello was going to cover her junk, or what. But it’s not okay. It’s as not okay as the fact that they closed the Hostess factory. It’s as not okay as the fact that I have to get up for work before 6 am on Fridays. It’s as not okay as someone telling a small child that the tooth fairy pulls their teeth out while they’re sleeping with a really large wrench and                                                      no Novocain.
